A booklet we got when we attended a seminar conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute is very informative. It is titled “Management Guide For Insect Pests And Diseases Of Lowland Vegetables.”
Pictures of the pests are featured, including their characteristics, damage symptoms and control measures. Example: Aphids which suck the plant sap resulting in poor stand, stunting and low yield. They affect all parts of the plants. Ways to control the pest are cited.
Other pests featured: Tomato fruit worm, cutworm, eggplant fruit and shoot borer, leafhoppers, 28-spotted lady beetle, bean pod borer, bean fly, vegetable leaf miner, yellow beetle, fruitfly, and okra yellow bug/cotton stainer.
Diseases featured: Fungus diseases – damping off, stem rot in beans, cabbage, carrots, celery, cucumber, lettuce, onion, peas, squash, tomatoes and many others; Verticillium Wilt, Fusarium wilt, Southern Blight, Early Blight, Late Blight, Anthracnose, Cercospora Leaf Spot, Downy Mildew, Phomopsis Blight, Scab, Fusarium Dry Root Rot, Rhizoctonia Root Rot, Powdery Mildew, Leaf Mold.
Bacterial Diseases – Bacterial Wilt, Bacterial Spot. Virus Diseases – Bean Mosaic Virus, Squash Mosaic Virus, Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Disease caused by Nematode – Root Knot.
Other Plant Disorders and Deficiencies – Blossom End Rot, Sun Scald.
