Edna Sanchez is a Meralco retiree who opted to become a gentlewoman farmer who cultivates a 3.5-hectare diversified farm in Jalajala, Rizal. Her main produce is dragon fruit grown organically on two hectares.
Last fruiting season (2018), she harvested 2.7 tons of fruits which she made into wine amounting to 4,500 liters. The wine is in 750 ml bottles which sell for P285 per bottle.
Edna devotes 0.7 hectare to high-value crops that include kale, lettuce and pinakbet type veggies like eggplant, tomato, pepper, okra and others. She observes that kale is very profitable because she can sell the same at P220 per kilo of leaves. Kale is believed to be very good for the health. Of the pinakbet type, the most saleable are eggplant and okra.
Her farm animals include goats, sheep, cattle, horses, geese, chickens and native pigs.
Edna says she practices organic farming but her farm is not certified as such. However, the farm is GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certified. It is an Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) learning site and a TESDA farm school. Edna can be contacted at 0920-967-5182.
