SWEET CORN FOR SILAGE

AFTER POSTING in this blog about the new sweet corn hybrid, Sweet Fortune from Ramgo, one pageviewer immediately contacted us asking where he could buy the seeds for planting. He went on to say that he is interested to plant this new hybrid because he could make money two ways.

Sweet Fortune also produces high amount of biomass good for making silage.

One is that he will make money selling the ears for boiling. Since the stover will still be very fresh at 70-75 days old, the same could be made into silage for his goats and dairy cows. He could also encourage other farmers to plant Sweet Fortune so he can buy the corn stalks after harvesting. Not really a bad idea.

Jason Villegas of Ramgo says that Sweet Fortune can be a very good material for silage making because the plants are big and so there’s a high yield of biomass.
